To speak of the history of Portuguese pop-rock is to speak of JAFUMEGA. The long and diverse musical experience of its members, as well as their great technical proficiency, allowed the group to expand its talent across very distinct genres.
This proved decisive in shaping the sound of the band they formed 45 years ago, unparalleled among groups of the time.
At the height of the Portuguese rock boom, JAFUMEGA took the country by storm: “The bridge is a passage... to the other side” was one of the most heard and repeated verses at the beginning of the decade. The hit “Ribeira”, inspired by the riverside area of ??Porto, was released in 1981 and became a huge radio success, allowing the band a contract with the multinational record label Polygram.
The self-titled album recorded in 1982 for Polygram includes new songs that have had a great impact to this day, such as “Latin’América”, “Kasbah” and “Nó Cego”.
The last album they recorded, “Recados-da cidade e do campo” (Messages from the City and the Countryside), was released in 1983 by Polygram. “Romaria” and “La Dolce Vita” were hit songs from this album, in which the band brilliantly demonstrates the unique synthesis they achieved of various musical genres, in songs like “Rústica” or “Nordeste”.
In 1985, JAFUMEGA decided to stop performing. Behind them lay a brief but memorable period in Portuguese pop-rock.
45 years after their founding, they return to the big stages to celebrate with the audience that followed them in the 80s, but also with those who discovered the band in recent decades and never had the opportunity to see them live.
These shows are a moment of reunion between the band and their fans, an opportunity to see and hear JAFUMEGA play the songs everyone knows and some new ones!
Some years have passed, much life has been lived. What will the music be like today?
From the original lineup, Luís Portugal (vocals), José Nogueira (saxophones and keyboards), and Mário Barreiros (guitars) remain, following the departure, for personal reasons, of Álvaro Marques and Pedro Barreiros, and the passing of Eugénio Barreiros, the composer of some of the group's most emblematic songs. Currently, three other guest musicians join this trio in live performances.
